Question

The inverse of resistance is called ________.

Open in App
Solution

Resistance:

  1. Resistance R can be defined as the measure of opposition to the flow of current through a circuit.
  2. According to Ohm's law, “The current I flowing in a circuit is directly proportional to the potential V across it, given all physical conditions and temperature remains same.”
  3. So, VI. Thus a proportionality constant, which is resistance, is introduced V=IR.
  4. Thus, the formula for resistance can also be given as R=VI.
  5. R is constant for a given metallic wire, if the temperature remains constant.
  6. Its SI unit is ohms Ω.

Conductance:

  1. Conductance C can be defined as the measure of the ease with which the current flows through a circuit.
  2. Conductance is the reciprocal of resistance, C=1R.
  3. Its SI unit is seimens S, also known as mho.

Hence, the inverse of resistance is called conductance.
