The angle of contact of the liquid that does not wet the solid surface:

  1. The liquids are generally known to make the solid substances wet when they get into physical contact with each other.
  2. This phenomenon usually depends on the contact angle between the liquid and solid surfaces.
  3. When the liquid does not wet the sides of a solid object, it refers that the angle of contact must be more than 90° but less than 180°.
  4. The phenomenon of liquid not wetting the solid surface happens when the interaction of liquid molecules is greater than the interaction between the liquid and solid molecule, which leads to an obtuse angle of contact.
  5. Thus, a liquid that does not wet the solid surface has the angle of contact as an obtuse angle (i.e.θ>90o).
  6. When the angle of contact is obtuse, the molecules of the liquid are attached strongly to themselves and weakly to those of solid, and thus the force of cohesion of liquid molecules is greater than the force of adhesion of liquid molecules and solid molecules.
