Modern periodic table:

  • “The physical and chemical properties of the elements are periodic functions of their atomic numbers”
  • The horizontal rows are called periods while the vertical columns are known as groups.
  • There is a total of seven periods. The period number is the highest principal quantum number (n) of the elements in the period.
  • It consists of 18 groups.
  • The modern periodic table is subdivided into four blocks:
  1. s-block- Group 1 and Group 2 are s-block elements.
  2. p-block- The elements from Group 13 to Group 18 are p-block elements.
  3. d-block- The transition metals that lie in Group 3 to Group 12 are d-block elements.
  4. f-block- The inner transition elements are f-block elements.
