The signs and symbols used in a map are called as Conventional symbols. A map is a representation or a drawing of the earth’s surface or a part of it drawn on a flat surface according to a scale. In the map, one cannot draw mountains, buildings, bridges, rivers and other features of this planet. Hence some specific symbols are used to denotes the vital features.

Conventional symbols of map

One cannot draw on a map the actual shape and size of different features and natural features such as buildings, roads, etc. Hence, they are represented by using certain letters, shades, colours, pictures and lines. These symbols provide a lot of information in a limited space. All the maps have a universal language that can be understood by everyone. There exists an international agreement regarding the use of these symbols in the map. These are called conventional symbols. Various colours are used for the same purpose. For example, generally blue is used for showing water bodies, brown for mountain, yellow for plateau and green is used for plains.
