Homogeneous mixtures

  • A homogeneous mixture is a gaseous, liquid, or solid mixture that has the same proportions of its components throughout a given sample.
  • It is uniform in composition throughout.
  • There is only one phase of matter observed in homogeneous mixtures.
  • Example -Salt solution.

Heterogeneous mixtures.

  • In heterogeneous mixtures, particles are distributed non-uniformly
  • More than one phase can be seen by the naked eye.
  • Non-uniform composition.
  • Example- Seawater

The sugar solution is a homogeneous mixture whereas oil and water are a heterogeneous mixture

  • The sugar solution is a homogenous mixture because sugar dissolves and spread throughout the glass of water
  • It forms a single phase as it is a homogeneous mixture
  • In oil and water, they are heterogenous mixtures because oil and water do not mix. It forms two layers.

Hence the sugar solution is a homogeneous mixture whereas oil and water are a heterogeneous mixture.
