What does the term open circuit mean?

The term open circuit means that no current flows through the cell. Here, the continuity of the circuit is broken as a result of which the current does not flow. The open-circuit voltage is the difference of electric potential between two terminals of a device when disconnected from any circuit.  Open circuit is any circuit that not pass current when potential difference is established across it, hence its resistance is infinity.
