Question

What is the total number of magnetic lines of force crossing a surface called?

Open in App
Solution

Concept

  1. Magnetic flux: The number of magnetic field lines passing through a surface area normally is called magnetic flux. It is denoted by ϕ.
  2. Magnetic flux is mathematically equal to the dot product of the magnetic field and area vector through which it is passing.
  3. ϕ=BA=BAcosθ
Where B= magnetic field, A=area vector, and θ=angle between BandA
  4. The SI unit of magnetic flux is weber (Wb).

Step 1 Comment on the magnetic flux

  1. Electric field: The space or region around the electric charge in which electrostatic force can be experienced by other charged particles is called an electric field by that electric charge.
  2. Electric flux(ΦE) : The electric flux through a given area held inside an electric field is the measure of the total number of electric lines of force passing normally through that area.
  3. The number of magnetic field lines passing through a surface area normally is called magnetic flux.
