Question

Two objects repeal each other. What are the possible repulsions?

Open in App
Solution

Concept used:

Repulsion is a force that causes a separation between two charges or poles that are identical or similar.

  1. When like poles are pushed together, there exists a force of repulsion. Two magnets move apart from each other when like poles are brought near to each other.
  2. The electrostatic force is an attractive and repulsive force between particles caused due to their electric charges. The electric force between stationary charged bodies is conventionally known as the electrostatic force. It is also referred to as Columb’s force.
  3. Like charges repel each other while unlike charges attract each other.
  4. Therefore, similar charges repel each other and the same poles repel each other.

IGCSE PHYSICS: 2.22 understand that there are forces of attraction between unlike charges and forces of repulsion between like charges

Explanation:

Repulsion could be magnetic repulsion or electrostatic repulsion.

  1. Magnetic repulsion includes repulsion force between same poles. When either the south poles or north poles of two magnets are brought near to each other they repel each other.
  2. In electrostatic repulsion, when two positive or negative charges of a similar kind are brought near, they repel each other.

Thus, in electrostatic force, similar charges may repel each other and in magnetic force, similar poles may repel each other.
