Question

Water in a canal 1.5m wide and 6m deep is flowing with a speed of 10km/hr. How much area will it irrigate in 30minutes if 8cm of standing water is desired?

Solution

Step 1: Finding the volume of canal

We have,

Breadth of the canal=1.5m

Depth/height of the canal=6m

Speed of water flowing in a canal=10km/h

Length of canal in 1hour=10km

Length of canal in 30minutes=30×1060=5km=5000m

Therefore,

Volumeofcanal=l×b×h=5000×1.5×6m3

Step 2: Finding the area to be irrigated

Now,

Volumeofwaterincanal=Volumeofareatobeirrigated5000×6×1.5=Areairrigated×height45000=Areairrigated×8100[Since1m=100cm]Areairrigated=45000×1008Areairrigated=562500m2=56.25hectares[Since1hectare=10000m2]

Hence, it will irrigate 56.25hectaresor562500m2 area in 30minutes.
