  1. Microbes are utilized in industry to synthesize various compounds that are beneficial to humans.
  2. Examples - Beverages (wine, beer, whisky, brandy, or rum), Antibiotics (Penicillin).

Antibiotics:

  1. Antibiotics are chemical compounds produced by certain microorganisms which can kill or retard the growth of other (disease-causing) microbes.
  2. They have significantly enhanced our ability to treat severe diseases like plague, whooping cough, and leprosy.
  3. The first antibiotic discovered was penicillin.

Precautions to be taken while using antibiotics are:

  1. Antibiotics should only be taken under the guidance of a skilled physician.
  2. The antibiotic course should be finished according to the doctor's instructions.
  3. Antibiotics must be administered in the correct dosage and at the appropriate time.
  4. Antibiotics that are given in the wrong dose become useless.
  5. Excessive medication usage might also harm the beneficial bacteria in our bodies.
