Biotechnology is a branch of science that develops or creates products using biological systems or components of them.

Applications of biotechnology in the field of agriculture:

  1. Recombinant DNA technology is used to produce genetically modified products that produce a high yield in agriculture.
  2. With the help of biotechnological studies, one can collect and nurture immature embryos and preserve them for future use.
  3. Somatic hybridization is a method of manipulating the cellular genome by protoplast fusion.
  4. A method called, tissue culture, helps to nurture plant fragments to develop which otherwise would not have grown in natural habitats.

Applications of biotechnology in the field of medicine:

  1. By using molecular markers, it is easier to analyze segments of DNA that are associated with that particular location.
  2. The production of vaccines helps one to prevent diseases.
  3. Diseases such as cancer and Parkinson's disease are diagnosed via gene therapy.
  4. With the help of gene therapy, the parents aspiring children can analyze and eliminate hereditary disorders in their offspring.
