Solution

Nutrition:

  1. It is the process of consuming food and transforming it into energy and other vital components essential for life.
  2. In living organisms, two types of nutrition are found, that is, autotrophic and heterotrophic modes of nutrition.

Autotrophic nutrition:

  1. It is a process in which the organism generates its food with the help of basic inorganic substances like water, mineral salts, and carbohydrates in the presence of sunlight.
  2. All the green plants, bacteria like cyanobacteria, and red and green algae exhibit an autotrophic mode of nutrition.

The essential conditions for autotrophic nutrition are:

  1. The presence of sunlight is the main source of energy.
  2. Supply of carbon dioxide and water.
  3. The existence of chlorophyll in the leaves of plants helps to captivate the energy from the sunlight.

The by-products of the autotrophic mode of nutrition are oxygen and carbohydrates (glucose).
