To put it another way, a virtual image is discovered by tracing real rays that emerge from an optical device (lens, mirror, or some combination thereof) backward to perceived or apparent ray divergences.
Virtual rays are typically represented in optical system diagrams by dotted lines, as opposed to solid lines for real rays.
