Food is the main source of energy and nutrients in our body. It is made up of several ingredients obtained from plants and animals.  The human body needs different kinds of nutrients for proper functioning. A single type of food item does not have all the nutrients needed by our body. Eating a variety of food items provides all the necessary nutrients in the required amounts. The nutrients present in the food include carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. Food also contains fibers and water beneficial to our body.

Components of Food Items


These are required by the muscles, blood, skin, hair, nails, etc. The proteins are obtained from the plant sources as well as animal sources. Lean meat, fish, eggs, cheese are the main source of animal proteins. The proteins present in the milk and eggs contain all the amino acids required by the body. These are a valuable source of energy for kids.


These provide energy to the body tissues. These are obtained mainly from plant sources such as wheat, rice, maize, potatoes, peas, beans, and fruits. Out of these, wheat, rice, and maize are the three main cereal crops rich in carbohydrates. They have a large quantity of starch.


The vitamins are absorbed, stored, and transported by the fats. They moisturize the skin and supply energy to different parts of the body. All the cooking oils, milk, eggs, supply fat to our body.

These are responsible for the growth and maintenance of our bodies. The essential vitamins include A, C, D, E, K, and B-complex. Vitamin D and K are made by our bodies. All the other vitamins are provided by the food we eat.


The metals, non-metals, and their salts are mined from the soil. These are known as minerals. The most important minerals required by our body are-
