Rate-determining step:

  • “The overall rate of the reaction is controlled by the slowest step in a multi step reaction called the rate-determining step (RDS).”

Example:

  • Consider the decomposition of Hydrogen peroxide H2O2:

2H2O2(aq)AlkalinemediumI-2H2O(l)+O2(g)

  • The reaction takes place in two steps:

Step1:H2O2(aq)+I-(aq)H2O(l)+IO-(aq)(slow)Step2:H2O2(aq)+IO-(aq)H2O(l)+I-(aq)+O2(g)(fast)

  • Thus, the rate-determining step is step 1 as it is the slowest step.
  • The rate of the reaction can be depicted as:

Rate=-d[H2O2]dt=k[H2O2][I-]

Here, -d[H2O2]dt is the decrease in the concentration of hydrogen peroxide with time.

Here, k is the rate constant, H2O2 is the concentration of hydrogen peroxide, and I- is the concentration of iodide ion.

  • Here, the rate depends on the concentration of hydrogen peroxide and the concentration of iodide ions.
