Question

What factors affect hydrogen bonding?

Open in App
Solution

Hydrogen bonding:

  • A hydrogen bond is formed when hydrogen is bonded to the more electronegative atom/group.
  • It is a special type of dipole-dipole interaction.

Factors affecting hydrogen bond:

1. Polarity:

  • Polarity is caused between two atoms/molecules having electronegativity differences.
  • Polarity gives the ability to the water molecules to stick together with each other. Thus, water behaves like a good solvent.

2. Extensiveness:

  • More hydrogen bonds will have a molecule that can form many hydrogen bonds with adjacent molecules.
