What is A Bacteriophage?

Bacteriophage is a virus that attacks bacteria. They have the ability to destroy their host cells. A bacteriophage is composed of nucleic acid surrounded by a protein structure. It attaches itself to the bacterium and infects the host cell. It also utilises the host machinery to multiply and produce viral components. The new bacteriophages produced assemble and burst out of the bacterium through cell lysis.
