What is a pollutant? Name the major air pollutants.

A pollutant is a substance that when introduced in the atmosphere causes undesirable changes in the atmosphere. The major pollutants include:

  • Particulate Matter
  • Chlorofluorocarbons
  • Carbon monoxide
  • Nitrogen dioxide
  • Sulphur dioxide
  • Ozone

These pollutants are emitted from vehicles, industries, refrigerators, air conditioners, etc. and are majorly responsible for changes in the climatic conditions. The increase in the earth’s temperature, commonly known as global warming, is one of the major effects of increasing pollutants in the environment.

The biological pollutants are yet another class of pollutants that are emitted from microbiological contamination such as human and animal skin, and the droppings of pests.
