What is a sooty and non-sooty flame?

Open in App
Solution

Sooty flame

  • A black unburned carbon particle can be seen in the sooty flame as this flame burns with a yellow flame due to incomplete combustion.
  • If there is insufficient air supply, then incomplete combustion of saturated hydrocarbons produces a sooty flame.

Non-sooty flame

  • A non-sooty flame, on the other hand, produces no black particles and burns with a pure blue flame.
  • Saturated hydrocarbons like alkanes on complete combustion burns with a clear blue flame.
