  1. Algae are chlorophyll-bearing, simple, thalloid, autotrophic, and largely aquatic (both fresh water and marine) organisms.
  2. They can be found in various environments such as soil and wood in the presence of fungi (lichens).
  3. Algae come in a wide range of shapes and sizes.
  4. Algae reproduce vegetatively, asexually, and sexually.
  5. Chlorophyceae, Phaeophyceae, and Rhodophyceae are the three major groups of algae.
  6. Algae are beneficial to humans in a number of ways.
  7. Algae photosynthesis accounts for at least half of the total carbon dioxide fixing on the planet.
  8. Agar, a commercial substance derived from Gelidium and Gracilaria, is used to culture bacteria and ice cream, and jelly preparations.
  9. Examples- Chlamydomonas, Laminaria, and Porphyra.
