Open in App
Solution

Step 2: Definition

A magnet that consists of a piece of iron or steel surrounded by a coil is known as an electromagnet. When an electric current is passed through the coil, the metal becomes magnetic.

Step 2: Uses of the electromagnet

The two uses of electromagnets are provided below:

  1. In electrical devices such as loudspeakers, electric bell, and electric motor.
  2. Used by doctors in MRI scanners, and for treating knee pain by using a pulsing electromagnetic field (PEMF).

Therefore, electromagnets are made out of a coil of wire (wire curled in series). This is more effective in producing a magnetic field than just a wire running straight.
