What is Asexual Reproduction?

Reproduction is the biological process of producing its own offspring. There are two modes of reproduction- Sexual and Asexual reproduction. Every living organism reproduces by either of these two modes of reproduction to maintain the continuity of life.

Asexual reproduction

In an asexual mode of reproduction, the new offspring are reproduced from a single parent, which are identical to each other, both by physically and genetically. The whole process of reproduction takes place in a small period of time, without the formation of gametes and the fertilization process.

Asexual mode of reproduction is mostly seen in all single-celled organisms including Amoeba, bacteria, archaebacteria, euglena, sporozoans, protist, Planaria and also in some plants like ferns, fungi and in some multicellular animals. There are various methods of asexual reproduction.

The different ways of asexual reproducing, which includes:

  • Budding
  • Sporogenesis
  • Binary fission
  • Fragmentation
  • Vegetative propagation
