What Is Chargaff S Rules?

Watson and Crick proposed that DNA as made up of two strands that are twisted around each other to form a right-handed helix. DNA double helix is stabilized by two forces – hydrogen bonds formed between paired bases in opposite strands and base-stacking interactions.

Base pairing occurs between the complementary base pairs- A & T, C & G, to form units called base pairs. So, in individuals of the same species, the amount of adenine(A) was very close to the amount of thymine(T), and the amount of cytosine(C) was very close to the amount of guanine(G), or A = T and G = C. These, relationships are known as Chargaff’s rules.
