• It is pure substance which is made from atoms of different elements combined together in a fixed ratio by mass.
• The constituents of a compound cannot be separated into simple substances by physical processes but can be separated by chemical processes.
• Water, carbon dioxide, ammonia, etc. are the examples of compounds.

Examples of compounds:

• A water molecule consists of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom.

• A carbon dioxide molecule consists of one carbon atoms and two oxygen atoms.
