Question

What is electrolysis reactions in aqueous solutions?

Open in App
Solution

Electrolysis:

  • It is the reaction of the process involving the usage of an electric current to split water (H2O) into oxygen (O2) and hydrogen (H2).
  • Electrolysis reactions in aqueous solutions involve one of the redox reactions-

At Cathode:

  • The cations are reduced to neutral atoms.
  • Reduction of water to hydrogen occurs.

At anode: Oxidation of:

  • Anions are oxidized to elemental atoms or molecules.
  • Active anode metals are also oxidized to metal ions.
  • Also, water is oxidized to oxygen.
