Question

What is EMF?

Open in App
Solution

EMF:

The full form of EMF is electromotive force. It must be defined as the electrical potential generated either by an electrochemical cell or perhaps a magnetic field fluctuation.

  1. EMF is denoted by “ε”.
  2. The unit of EMF is “Joule/Columbus(J/C)”.
  3. The dimension of EMF is “M1L2T-3I-1”.

Mathematical representation:

Mathematically, emf can be represented as:

ε=V+Ir

Here,

ε is the Electromotive force.

V is the voltage of the cell.

I is the current across the circuit.

r is the internal resistance of the cell.
