Question

What is meant by the statement "Atoms are electrically neutral"?

Open in App
Solution

Atoms:

  • An atom is composed of three subatomic particles that are known as Electrons, Protons, and Neutrons.
  • Protons and Neutrons are present inside the nucleus of an atom while the electrons revolve around it in defined orbits.
  • Nuretons do not carry any electrical charge, thus they are electrically neutral.
  • Electrons are negatively charged species while protons are positively charged.
  • They both have the same magnitude of the electric charge on it but are of opposite nature.
  • An atom contains the same no. of protons and electrons and thus the net electric charge is canceled.
  • Thus, the atom is an “electrically neutral species” as there is no charge on it.
