Question

What is the oxidation number of carbon in CN- ion?

Open in App
Solution

Calculation of oxidation number of carbon in CN-ion:

Let oxidation number of Carbon in CN-= x

The oxidation number of nitrogen =-3, since oxidation no. of Nitrogen atom, is taken as -3 when it is bonded with less electronegative element than it.

The sum of the oxidation number is the same as the charge on the ion.

x+(-3)=-1x-3=-1x=-1+3x=+2

Hence, oxidation number of Carbon in CN- ion is +2.
