What is role of liver in iron homeostasis?

There are three major functions of the liver:

  • It is the major place where the production of proteins takes place which maintains the systemic iron balance
  • It is the place where the storage of excess iron can happen
  • It is the vital organ in the mobilization of the iron where the metabolic circulation takes place.

These are the three reasons why iron plays an important role in iron homeostasis.
