Solution

Saytzeff's rule

  • In dehydrohalogenation reactions, the preferred product is that alkene which has a greater number of alkyl groups attached to the doubly bonded carbon atoms.
  • Saytzeff's rule helps to determine the formation of the major alkene in a dehydrohalogenation reaction.
  • The rule gives only the picture of the regiochemistry of the elimination reaction, not the stereochemistry of the product.

Example of Saytzeff’s rule

  • An alkyl halide reacts with a base to give alkene, where the major and minor products are decided with the help of Saytzeff's rule.
Example of Saytzeff’s rule
  • In the above reaction, but-2-ene is formed as the major project as the carbon atoms involved in the double bond are attached to more number of alkyl groups when compared to the carbon atoms in but-1-ene.
