Question

What Is The Difference Between Efflorescence And Deliquescence?

Open in App
Solution

The difference between efflorescence and deliquescence is as follows,

EfflorescenceDeliquescence
Efflorescence refers to losing the water of crystalline molecule when exposed to air at ordinary temperature.Deliquescence is the process by which a chemical substance aborbs moisture from the atmosphere and dissolved in it to form solution.
Efflorescence occurs when the aqueous vapour pressure of the hydrate is greater compared to the partial pressure of the water vapour in the air. Deliquescence occurs when the vapour pressure of the solution that is formed is less compared to the partial pressure of water vapour in the air.
Example: Washing soda(Na2CO3.10H2O) which loses nine water molecule and after sometime loses all ten water molecule to convert in anhydrous form.Example: Sodium hydroxide(NaOH), Potassium hydroxide(KOH)
