Solution

Functions of a stem in a plant:

  1. The stem belongs to the shoot system and can vary in length, and diameter, and maybe soft or woody.
  2. The stem is a link between the roots and the other parts of the plant such as leaves, fruits, and flowers.
  3. It provides support to the leaves, fruits, and flowers.
  4. The stem arranges the branches and leaves in a way that all the leaves get enough sunlight to carry out photosynthesis.
  5. It is responsible for carrying minerals, water, and glucose to different parts of the plant.
  6. When the stems are green, they may contain chloroplasts and perform photosynthesis.
  7. The stems can also be modified for food storage (tubers) and vegetative propagation (bear buds) as seen in potatoes.
