What is the function of renal tubule?

Open in App
Solution

Renal tubule:

  1. The nephron is a structural and functional unit of the kidneys.
  2. Each nephron consists of two major parts, namely the renal tubule and renal corpuscle.
  3. The renal tubule is a lengthy, convoluted structure that is found arising from the glomerulus. the filtering unit of the kidney.
  4. The renal tubule is separated into three functional segments which are:
  1. PCT (proximal convoluted tubule): It is the first segment of the tubule and is located close to the renal cortex.
  2. Loop of Henle: It is U shaped structure that goes through the renal medulla.
  3. DCT (distal convoluted tubule): It is the last segment of the tubule which also lies close to the renal cortex.

Functions of renal tubule:

  1. The first segment of the renal tubule is involved in the reabsorption of solutes that play an essential role in maintaining proper bodily functions.
  2. Reabsorption of solutes such as amino acids, glucose, and salts, takes place.
  3. This reabsorption might be active, as in the case of glucose, amino acids, and peptides, or passive, as in the case of water, chloride, and other ions.
