Biodiversity refers to the variety of plant and animal species found on the earth. It is an important source of food, clothing, shelter, medicine and other materials for domestic and commercial purposes. The importance of biodiversity is discussed below:
- Most of the pharmaceutical drugs are obtained from different species of plants. For eg., an anticancer drug, taxol, is obtained from Pacific Yew trees.
- It is a great attraction for tourism.
- The resources such as timber, minerals, water and agricultural products that are essential to our economy are obtained from plants.
- The plants help in maintaining the earth’s temperature by absorbing carbon dioxide, thereby, maintaining ecological balance.
