What is the least count of a metre rule?

Each and every instrument we use for measuring has small errors in them. Let us know more about it.

Least Count

The smallest value that can be measured by the measuring instrument is called its least count. The least count can also be referred to as the error associated with the resolution of the instrument.

Formula of least count

To calculate the least count we use the formula given below

Least count =Magnitude of a division/ Number of division to reach that magnitude

Least count of a Meter Scale

In the case of a meter scale let us consider the magnitude 1cm. The number of divisions that have taken to reach is 10.

So least count  can be calculated as per the formula as follows

1cm/10 =o.1cm or 1mm

Hence least count of meter scale is o.1cm or 1mm
