Hemoglobin is an iron-containing protein found in the red blood vessels of vertebrates which fulfill the transport of oxygen to the tissues. The heme or iron content in the protein gives it a bright red colour. The molecular weight of hemoglobin is 64kDa. It is made up of four heme groups surrounding the globin proteins. A porphyrin ring is formed, to which the iron atom is attached.
