Question

What is the molecular weight of H2O?

Open in App
Solution

Molecular weight:

  1. The sum of the atomic weight values of the atoms in a molecule is measured as molecular weight.
  2. Molecular weight is used to calculate stoichiometry in chemical reactions and equations.

The molecular weight of H2O:

The atomic mass of hydrogen is 1u.

The atomic mass of oxygen is 16u.

H2O has two hydrogens and one oxygen.

Therefore,

Molecular weight of H2O=1×2+16×1u

=(2+16)u=18u
