The procedure by which different gases can be obtained from the air is fractional distillation.

Fractional distillation:

  • To separate the different gases from the air, they need to be converted into a liquid in order to perform fractional distillation.
  • “To separate a mixture of two or more miscible liquids for which the difference in boiling points is less than 25K, the fractional distillation process is used.”
  • Fractional distillation involves the separation of two miscible liquids.
  • Thus when air is converted into liquid, it contains miscible liquids which can be separated out with the help of fractional distillation.
  • A simple fractionating column consists of a tube packed with glass beads. The beads provide a surface for the vapors to cool and condense repeatedly."
