What is the reaction of copper in HCl?

Open in App
Solution

Copper

  • Copper is a chemical element having an atomic number 29 and is represented by a symbol Cu.
  • Copper is derived from the Latin word cuprum.
  • It is ductile, malleable metal with excellent thermal and electrical conductivity.
  • A freshly exposed pure copper surface is pinkish-orange in color.

The reaction of copper with HCl

  • Copper does not react with HCl acid.
  • Metals with lower standard reduction potentials than hydrogen react with non-oxidizing acids such as HCl and dilute H2SO4 to displace hydrogen from them.
  • The reaction can be shown as follows:
  • Cu(s)+2HCl(aq)CuCl2(s)+H2(g)
