Question

What is the relationship between bond length and bond multiplicity?

Open in App
Solution

Bond Length

  • It is the equilibrium distance between the centers of the nuclei of the bonded atoms in a molecule.

Bond Multiplicity

  • It is the number of electron pairs between the bonded atoms in chemical bonding.
  • Bond multiplicity can be given by 2S+1where S is the total spin angular momentum.

Relationship between bond length and bond multiplicity:

  • Bond length and multiplicity of bond are in inverse relation with each other.
  • Multiplicityofbond1Bondlength
  • As, there is an increase in multiplicity of bonds, the bond length decreases.
  • Consequently, there is a decrease in the internuclear distance of the bonded atoms.
