Gloriosa superba, commonly known as flame or glory lily, the State flower of Tamil Nadu. It is also the national flower of Zimbabwe. The flower has many features and it looks a little different from other flowers.

Reason for choosing Gloriosa superba ( Flame lily) as the state flower of Tamil Nadu

Gloriosa superba ( Flame lily) is called as the state flower of Tamil Nadu due to the following reasons

  • The seeds of the plant, comprises of therapeutic properties, that are exported to western countries for medicinal use.
  • The chemical, Colchicine, which is extracted from the seeds of the flower, are used in treating joint pains and rheumatism.
  • The tubers of the plant are used to save people from poisonous snake bites and scorpion attacks.

Areas of cultivation of Flame lily flower

Due to such vital properties, the flower is cultivated in few areas of the state over a large area of land.

  • The plant is widely cultivated in some districts of the states like Tiruchi, Karur, Ariyalur, Dindigul, Namakkal, Erode and Coimbatore.
  • Tiruchi district grows this abundance.
  • In Tiruchi district, the plant is cultivated in more than 250 acres of land in Thuraiyur and Vaiyambadi areas.
