Open in App
Solution

Leaching

  • The leaching of alumina from bauxite is an example of the leaching process.

Baeyer's process in leaching

  • Baeyer’s process is used for refining bauxite to produce alumina(aluminum oxide).
  • Bauxite is the principal ore of aluminum. It usually contains SiO2 , titanium oxide, and iron oxides as impurities.
  • Aluminum ore is processed with concentrated Sodium hydroxide in Bayer's technique.
  • It produces soluble sodium aluminate, which is filtered out.
  • When the filtrate is heated with water, it produces aluminum hydroxide, which when heated further produces alumina.
