Tincture of iodine is also known as a weak iodine solution or iodine tincture. Iodine tincture is an antiseptic used to disinfect the wounds. The structure of the iodine tincture is 2 to 7 % of the iodine and the remaining is either Sodium or potassium iodide.

Use of Iodine tincture

  • Tincture of iodine is also available in medical emergency kits,  used in disinfection of cuts and for the intake of surface water.
  • Small quantities can be introduced to suspect water sources as a usually 5 mg free iodine per liter disinfectant or 5 drops of 2 percent tincture. While this procedure does work against viruses and bacteria.
  • Iodine tincture is being used to kill viruses and bacteria and sanitize the surfaces of vegetables and fruits. The developing sanitizing concentration is 25 ppm idophor for 1 min.
