Question

What is the use of conducting Molisch's test?

Open in App
Solution

Molisch's test:

  • Molisch's test is conducted to detect the presence of carbohydrates in a solution.
  • Molisch's reagent is used for this purpose which is a solution of α-naphthol in ethanol (C2H5OH).
  • Along with Molisch's reagent, few drops of Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) are also added to the solution to be tested.
  • A purplish-red or purple ring is formed at the contact point of H2SO4 and the rest of the mixture (solution + Molisch's reagent).
  • This confirms the presence of carbohydrates in the solution.
