What is White Phosphorus?

Phosphorus is found in number of allotropic forms in which well recognised are being black,red and white. White phosphorus is a translucent white waxy solid.

  • It is poisonous,insoluble in water but soluble in carbon disulphide.
  • it glows in the dark(chemiluminescence). It dissolves in boiling NaOH solution in an .inert atmosphere giving PH3.

It turns yellow when exposed to light so it is also called as yellow phosphorus.
