Question

What were the drawbacks of Rutherford's Atomic Model?

Open in App
Solution

Rutherford's Atomic Model:

  • Rutherford bombarded a thin sheet of gold foil with alpha particles and studied the path of these particles and gave his atomic model.
  • According to his model, the mass of the atom and the positive particles lie at the center of the atom called the nucleus.
  • He also predicted that the negatively charged particles revolved around the nucleus in circular paths called orbits.
  • The electrons and nucleus are held together by strong electrostatic force.

Drawbacks of Rutherford's Atomic Model:

  • This model could not explain the motion of electrons in circular orbitals.
  • A charged particle would release energy during acceleration and eventually, it will fall into the nucleus.
