When does calcium deficiency occur?

Open in App
Solution

Hypocalcemia:

  1. Hypocalcemia is caused due to the decrease of calcium absorption in the intestines, owing to low plasma calcitriol levels.
  2. It can also be caused due to the increase of calcium-phosphate binding, caused by the increase of phosphate levels in blood serum.

Cause of Hypocalcemia

  1. Hypoparathyroidism leads to a low concentration of blood calcium levels causing neurons and muscle fibers to depolarize and produce action potentials spontaneously. This leads to twitches, spasms, and tetany of skeletal muscles, also known as parathyroid tetany.
  2. During menopause, women tend to suffer from hypocalcemia, causing the hormone estrogen to thin bones.
