Thailand is known as the land of white elephants. It is officially known as the Kingdom of Thailand and formerly known as Siam is a country in Southeast Asia. The elephant is the national symbol of the country.

Why Thailand is considered as the land of white elephants?

In Thai culture, the status of rulers has been decided by the number of white elephants in their ownership and they have been generally viewed as an image of the King’s magnificence. Hence, the late King Bhumibol possessed the best and high number of white elephants. He had 21 white elephants and this can be viewed as an exceptional and extraordinary accomplishment. Eleven of these elephants are still alive however just five of them have imperial titles. An elephant has to undergo various tests led by the Bureau of the Royal Household and certify that the elephant is suited for the title and has the physical as well as the conduct attributes required.
