Successor and predecessor

Predecessor and Successor are the two terms in mathematics most commonly used for the series and sequence of whole numbers. A predecessor is known as before numbers, and a successor is known as after numbers.

  • Successor – Successor, is the term that comes right after a particular number term, or a value. Suppose n is a whole number, then the successor of n is n+1. The other terminologies used for a successor are next value.
  • Predecessor – A predecessor is a value that comes right before a particular value. Suppose a value is x, then the predecessor of xwill be x1. Thus, to find the predecessor of any value we have to subtract the given value from 1.

Explanation

A number that comes before the given number is recognized as a predecessor. The predecessor of the natural number 1 is the whole number 0. It is true that one does not have any predecessor, which is a natural number.

Hence, 1 is the natural number that has no predecessor.
