In terms of size, tribes vary a great deal, ranging from about seven million to some Andamanese islanders who may number less than a hundred persons. The biggest tribes are the Gonds, Bhils, Santhals, Oraons, Minas, Bodos and Mundas, all of whom are at least a million strong.

  • The total population of tribes amounts to about 8.2% of the population of India, or about 84 million persons according to the 2001 Census.
  • According to Census Report 2011, it is 8.6% of the population of India, or about 104 million tribal persons in the country.

Bhils

Bhils or Bheel is the largest tribe in India. These are the people belonging to the states if Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh.

Where are they from?

These group of tribes are the inhabitants of Dhar, Jhabua, Khargone and Ratlam districts of Madhya Pradesh. A huge number of Bhils live in the neighbouring states of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan.

Language

Bhilli is the common language spoken by this group of tribe. The language has its basics from Gujarati. It has about 36 identified dialects and pronunciation differs by region.

Culture

The culture of Bhilli tribe is very rich and unique. Pithora painting mainly comes from this tribe. Ghoomar is a traditional folk dance of this tribe. This dance is the symbol of Womanhood. Young girls perform this dance depicting they are stepping into the shoes of women.

Food

Main food is maize, onion, chilli and garlic which are cultivated by themselves. Wheat and rice are the food taken only during special occassions.

Dress

The men wear traditional dresses known as Pagri, Angarkha, Dhoti and Gamchha and traditionally women wear Sari and Ghagra Choli.

Population

As per the 2011 census of India, Bhil is the most populous tribe with a total population of 4,618, 068 constituting 37.7% of the total Schedulaed Tribe population.
